Oh and another tip, the first time you go down, bring something that you made to show them what kind of wood (thickness, type, etc.) you are looking for. When I went they were amazed at how cute it was (and they were even the rugged guy type  ;D) and helped me dig through the pile and even cut some pieces for me and they set stuff aside for me now.

I go to my local lumber store, they let me pick through there scrap pile and take whatever I need for free.  Grin  I have found some nice pieces of mahogany that can be used for food prep boards. People usually buy a piece of wood and have it cut right there and the scraps are just left, so they don't mind letting me have them.
